If you want to achieve that bronzed look safely and incur no sun damage from tanning beds or prolonged exposure to the sun, self-tanners are the only way to go! Self tanners have come a long way since the 60's and are no longer smelly and create orange stains.
The active ingredient in all self-tanners is dihydroxyacetone (DHA). A chemical reaction starts between the self-tanner and the dead cells on the top layer of the skin as soon as the product is applied. The cells turn brown creating the look of a tan instantly or gradually depending on the self tanning formula used.
The FDA considers DHA safe as a self-tanning ingredient and it is not absorbed through the skin.
Self-tanners are a stain and last about three to four days. As they naturally exfoliate, the tan fades so plan on reapplying every few days to maintain your "tan".
How to Choose a Self Tanner:
The best self-tanner for you depends on
- whether you prefer a lotion, spray, or mousse.
- your skin type. If you have oily skin, choose St. Tropez Self-Tanning Spray or Whipped Bronze Mousse. If you have dry skin, choose St. Tropez Instant Self-Tanning Lotion.
Great Application:
- Exfoliate prior to using a self-tanner. This gives you a more even application, reduces streaking, dark elbows, knees and ankles! Use St. Tropez Body Polisher.
- Never apply a self tanner with your hands. Wear disposable gloves you can purchase or use a sponge applicator. If you do apply with your hands and need to remove it, use St. Tropez Self Tan Remover in a pump or single use packets.
- If you want a darker tan, apply self-tanner on consecutive days to create the shade you want.
- Apply moisturizer everyday to hydrate the skin and help maintain the tan.
